Apple Begins Offering ‘Last Compatible’ Version of Apps for Users Running Legacy Versions of iOS
Great move by Apple. If an app is released that targets a version more recent that the OS you’re running (say an app targets the brand new iOS 7, but you’re still running iOS 6 because 7 won’t run on your iPhone 4), the App Store will offer to allow you to download the latest version that was compatible with your OS. This strongly incentivizes app developers to move to the latest (especially iOS 7) because they won’t have to forcefully abandon their legacy users. A win for Apple – because more apps will utilize the absolute latest tech – and a win for users – because you won’t be nearly as “stranded” if your device can’t get the latest.
